Interview with Max and Steffie of Old Hickory
Decades of experience; vision on the past, present and future of the American Staffordshire Terrier
For this interview we approached Mr. and Mrs. Max and Steffie van Slijpe. They are the owners of the ‘Old Hickory’ kennel, located in Bemelen, the Netherlands. Due to their many years of experience in breeding, keeping and showing American Staffordshire Terriers, it was very interesting to hear their vision on the past, present and future of the breed.
The ‘Old Hickory’ kennel was built on American import dogs, although their very first Amstaff came from the Netherlands: General Grand of Debofol (27-5-1987).
Max started in 1952 with Bouviers and German Shepherds. Later he became interested in the French Bulldog and started a kennel in 1963. Steffie started with sport dogs and built a career as a dancer and teacher in show dancing, producing several European champions. Eventually, due to the growing workload with dogs and teaching, she decided to fully focus on the dogs.
Both Max and Steffie have always had a strong drive to achieve results, also in breeding and showing dogs. And they have certainly succeeded. ‘Old Hickory’ is among the kennels with the most World, European, International and national champions, many of them homebred.
Max, you were first active in another breed, the French Bulldog. How did your journey into the Amstaff world begin?
“My grandfather was the ‘Amstaff maker’ for us. At that time there was no kennel name yet and my father had a litter at some point. Around 1980 we wanted a dog that suited our home and we wanted to do something with dogs. First we became involved with the French Bulldog. We thought they were beautiful dogs, but health and character were not always what we were looking for. Then we got to know the Amstaff and it was immediately clear: this was the breed for us.
It had everything we considered important. Strength, intelligence, character and presence. It made a deep impression on us. From that moment on we were sold. In 1981 our first Amstaff entered our home. His name was General Dragon of Deborah and he was of Dutch origin. He was the dog that truly opened the door to the breed for us.”
Why did you choose the Amstaff?
“We chose this breed because they are extremely people-friendly, intelligent and reliable. They show strength and are close to nature. The breed is perfect for people who like a challenge without compromising their lifestyle.”
What changes and developments have you seen over the years?
“American breeders lost ground compared to European breeders due to years of export. This influenced development. Cropping bans changed expression. The Netherlands made a positive impact with natural-eared Amstaffs. However, we now see too many heavy dogs and a lack of consistency. The breed standard and cooperation between kennels deserve more attention.”
What is the best Amstaff in your opinion and why?
“We both consider our late female Michelle, Absolute Wild On Texas, to be the best Amstaff ever. She almost completely met the American standard and represented the ideal moderate type.”
What is your best homebred Amstaff?
“Old Hickory Miss Royanna, born 3-6-2010, with many titles such as European (Junior) Champion, International Champion and more. Her critiques often stated: ‘A REAL CHAMPION!!!’”
How do you see the future of the breed?
“We currently see the future as less positive than a few years ago. There are more negative reports in the media and less focus on quality breeding. A smaller group of responsible breeders must correct a growing group of irresponsible ones. How long this can continue remains an open question.”
We would like to thank Max and Steffie for their cooperation and openness. We wish them all the best for the future.
