Interview with Chuck Nelson
Can you please introduce yourself and tell us what your relation is to the breed?
My name is Chuck Nelson. I got my first Amstaff in 1972. I grew up living next door to Mount Shire Amstaffs (Jim & Carol Hartnett). That’s what started the love I have for this breed.
I did not breed many litters, but I was fortunate to have been involved with showing and breeding specialty and Best in Show winning Amstaffs together with my ex-wife and also Shondell Kennels.
On the cover we see Lobotown Puppy. What can you tell us about this dog and why did you choose this dog?
The cover dog is BISS Lobotown Puppy. I feel this dog truly represents proper balance, type and character for our breed.
You are also a judge. What do you like to see in a typical Amstaff, both in character and looks?
As a judge I like to see correct balance in an Amstaff. I look for a nice head with correct stop, jaws, bite and ear placement, leading into a strong neck and a correct front, body and rear.
A couple of years ago you judged at the USA Specialty and also shows in Europe. What differences did you notice?
When judging in Europe I found the quality of the breed very comparable to the US. I feel the breed is in very good hands with European breeders, as proven by European dogs competing and winning consistently in the US.
We must not forget movement in this breed. They are not a sporting or working breed, but a terrier and should move accordingly. I do feel we are facing some issues with tail sets, as I have seen many high tail sets recently.
Which Amstaff has made the most unforgettable impression on you over the years?
A dog that really stands out is Ch. Ruffian Red Rock of Harwyn. He was a very correct dog in size and type and influenced the look we see today. I have always tried to achieve that same look in the Amstaffs I have owned.
If I could give advice, I would say: study this dog and aim to breed something that resembles him.
You also own Amstaffs yourself. What can you tell us about them?
The Amstaff is a great all-round breed, a loyal companion and excellent family dog. My dogs have been raised with children throughout the years and are at their best protecting and playing with them.
You also handle different breeds. Is it difficult combining handling and judging? What do you enjoy most?
I have owned and shown many breeds: Australian Terriers, Bull Terriers (including co-breeding a Best in Show white Bull Terrier), Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers, West Highland White Terriers, Akitas and a Rottweiler.
All of these breeds have been winners, but at the end of the day my heart always returns to the Amstaff. They truly are a great breed.
It has been a pleasure to attend dog shows for over 44 years and see many beautiful Amstaffs. A compliment to all breeders and exhibitors.
I especially enjoy seeing them excel in obedience, agility, coursing and dock diving. It shows the true versatility of the breed.
